Yep! This is the recipe! I happened across Mom's old New Orleans cook book, and there this was, on page 43. It's a very well worn page! Oh, just remember how wonderful the whole house would smell when Mom would make these! You had to eat them while they were warm!
My mouth waters just thinking about them!
1 C. milk
1/4 C. granulated sugar
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1 pkg. active dry yeast
2 Tbsp. warm water
2 Tbsp. oil
1 egg
3 1/2 C. sifted flour
Sifted confectioner's sugar
Scald milk, add granulated sugar, salt, and nutmeg. Cool to lukewarm.
Sprinkle yeast into warm water, stirring until yeast is disolved.
To the lukewarm milk mixture add oil, egg, and dissolved yeast, blending with a spoon. Add flour gradually, beating well. Cover with waxed paper, then a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place, (about 85°), until double in size.
Turn dough, (it will be soft), on to well floured surface; knead gently. Roll into 18" x 12" rectangle; cut into thirty-six 3" x 2" rectangles. Cover with clean towel and let rise 1/2 hour.
Deep-fry, (375°F), doughnuts a few at a time until golden brown. Drain on crumpled paper towels. Drop doughnuts into brown paper bag, sprinkle with confectioner's sugar, and shake well until thoroughly coated.
Serve piping hot. Prepare to be smothered with hugs and kisses from your family.
